February 2010 - The following pages are an attempt at documenting some of the ongoing process of preserving this beautiful bit of our architectural heritage.

305 Bond Street/701 Mattison Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ

The first floor, three pediments, and various decorative features are constructed of red sandstone.  There is a band of ornamental terra cotta just below the pediment level.  The balance of the structure is red brick.

  A previous repair effort included a cementitious plaster coating, of  most of the building's stone.  The plaster cracked which allowed water to infiltrate the structure.  At the same time, the coating trapped this moisture inside the stone.  The stone's iron oxide binders dissolve in this constant acidic bath causing a serious deterioration of the material.
